I can gather the documents. Why can't I judge who's creditworthy?
Notice what you have done: you have confused collecting with understanding. The documents are in front of you. That is administration. Judging whether a borrower will repay is a different act entirely — it is judgment, and judgment is not given, it is trained. You are not missing some special talent the skilled analyst has. You are missing hours. Every person who reads a balance sheet and knows what it means has read hundreds before it, and been wrong on some of them, and been corrected. There is no shortcut past this. There is only the choice to start logging your calls and comparing them to outcomes, instead of waiting to feel ready. Do this with your team, not alone. Alone, you will avoid the file that embarrasses you. With others, someone will ask you why you scored it that way, and you will have to answer — and that is where the learning actually happens.
Gathering documents is labor. Judging creditworthiness is a skill — and skills are built by repetition with feedback, not by intention. You do not lack intelligence. You lack reps. Choose one file today, make your call, then check it against what actually happened. Do this weekly with others who do the same.
What changes unlock by starting
- You can name the three or four things you actually check, instead of gesturing at 'the whole picture'
- Your team catches disagreements before a decision is made, not after it goes wrong
- You stop mistaking having the paperwork for understanding what it means
- Your confidence comes from a track record, not a feeling
