Is AI going to replace me, or can I stay in charge?

You watch the tool write faster than you. It summarizes faster. It answers faster. A question rises you don't want to say out loud. If it can do this, why do they need you? That question is not really about the software. It is about whether you trust your own judgment enough to stand behind your work. Your team feels this too, even if no one names it in the meeting. Some pretend the tool is nothing. Some quietly let it make every decision for them. Both are hiding from the same question: what part of this work is actually yours to decide? The answer will not come from a policy memo or a training video. It comes from your team sitting down together and drawing a line. This we hand to the machine. This we do not. Draw that line now, or the tool will draw it for you.

This is fear wearing a tech mask — mostly a matter of confronting your own judgment, with a little practical framing on what to hand to the machine.

What’s really going on

The tool does not decide your worth — your judgment does. Stop asking whether AI replaces you and start asking what only you can judge: purpose, priority, consequence. Give the machine the labor. Keep the discernment. A team that decides together what it will not hand over stays necessary, whatever the tool can do.

A moveGather your team and list every task in your work. Mark which ones need your judgment about consequences, and which are just labor.
A moveAssign the machine the labor, not the judgment. Let it draft, summarize, and search. Never let it decide what matters.
A movePractice explaining your decisions out loud to your team, every week. If you can't explain why, you're not deciding — you're rubber-stamping.
A moveName one thing this month only a human on your team can be trusted to judge. Defend it in front of your manager.
A moveStop measuring yourself against the tool's speed. Measure yourself against the accuracy of your judgment.

  • You and your team agree, in plain terms, which decisions stay human.
  • You stop hiding behind the tool or dismissing it, and start directing it instead.
  • You can name, specifically, what you bring that the tool cannot.
  • Your team trusts each other's judgment more, because you've said it out loud.
