My pay keeps shifting and my rating scares me. What's mine to control?

You open the app and the rate has moved again since yesterday. Same street, same hour, different number. You did nothing to cause it. You can do nothing to undo it. Then the rating sits there like a verdict on you. One rider in a bad mood can cost you a fare next week, and you will never know which ride did it. So you start driving like a defendant — apologizing before anything has gone wrong. Here is what nobody tells new drivers: your pod carries the same two numbers, alone, in separate cars. Say them out loud to each other and they shrink to the size they actually are.

What’s really going on

The platform sets the rate. Riders set the rating. You set only two things: the work you do this hour, and what you tell your pod afterward. Stop managing the number. Start managing your response to it, out loud, with people who see the same screen you do.

🔒 What you’ll build togetherUnlock by starting
A moveEnd each shift by telling your pod one number you controlled and one you didn't. Name them specifically — 'I controlled how long I waited at the airport, I did not control why the surge ended early.'
A moveWhen a rate drops mid-shift, message the pod before you decide anything: 'Rate just dropped on my end, still worth it?' Let someone else's eyes check yours before you keep driving on a bad number.
A moveAgree on one check-in time for ratings — say, Sunday night, together on a call — and close the app to it the rest of the week. A number checked once loses its grip; checked hourly, it owns you.
A moveWhen a bad rating lands, bring the actual ride to your pod within a day: what you said, what they said, what happened. The story you build alone in your head is almost always worse than the ride that happened.
A moveEach week, pick one thing you can actually change — your hours, your route, how you greet a rider — and report back what happened. This is the only place your effort still buys something.
