Was giving up my craft to grow others even worth it?

You built things once. You could see your work — it ran, or it broke. Now you build people, and some weeks it feels like you built nothing at all. No code. No system. Just meetings, and other people's slow progress. Look closer at what you miss. It is not the work itself. It is the certainty. Code tells you fast if it works. A person you're growing might take a year to show it. That is not a smaller job. It is a harder one, judged on a longer clock. Whether the trade was worth it is not a question your memory can settle. Only the people you are shaping right now can answer it — and only if you look at them honestly.

The core problem is grief and self-judgment about an identity trade, which needs direct coaching; a smaller share of teaching helps the person build a real measure for a role that currently feels invisible.

What’s really going on

You cannot answer that by looking backward. Look at the people in front of you. If you are building engineers, the craft did not disappear — it changed hands. If you are not, fix that today. Grief over the past will not tell you what today's work is worth.

A moveName one person you've grown who is now better at the craft than you were at their stage. Write the name down. If you can't, that's your actual problem — not the trade itself.
A moveStop measuring your week by what you used to measure — commits, systems shipped. Pick one measure for growing people — skill gained, retention, promotions — and track it for 90 days.
A moveBuild something small yourself this month. Not to prove you still can. To remember the craft is still in your hands, only unused daily.
A moveAsk your team directly what they needed from you and got. Do not ask if they miss you as an engineer. That question only flatters you.
A moveBring this to your pod. Ask them to name what your work has made possible. You cannot see your own effect from inside it.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A concrete list of what you've built through other people, not a mood.
  • A working measure for your current role, so progress stops feeling invisible.
  • Less time spent mourning, more time spent doing the job you actually have.
  • An answer about the trade built from evidence, not from a bad week.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
