We built work that will outlast us. Did it matter?

You and the others gave years, maybe decades, to this. Now the question sits in the room with you: did any of it change anything. It feels like the most important question you could ask. It is also the wrong one to ask right now, because you cannot answer it. Whether your work mattered depends on people not yet born, using it in ways you cannot see. Asking a question with no answer is a comfortable way to avoid the one with an answer: what will you and your team do today. You did not choose to know the ending. You chose, every day, to do the work or not. That choice is still available this morning. Judge yourself there — nowhere else.

You will not get a verdict — that belongs to time, not to you. What is yours: whether the work was done honestly, whether it was handed on clean, and whether you start the next task today regardless of what history decides. Judge the doing, not the legacy.

A moveAs a group, write down the three things you now know that you didn't know when you started — no more, no less.
A moveName the person or team who inherits this work next. Write them one page: what to keep, what to drop, what not to waste ten years rediscovering.
A moveAsk each member privately: if the whole program were cancelled tomorrow, what one piece would you still defend? Compare answers out loud.
A moveStop asking whether the work mattered. Ask what the next experiment needs from you this week. Answer that instead.
A moveSet a real date to review what the program actually produced, separate from what it was supposed to produce. Do this without flattering yourselves.
