Knowledge + Guidance

We imagine every harm this AI could cause. How do we bear it?

You sit with your team and imagine what could go wrong. A model misused, a harm you did not intend, a name attached to your work in a headline you dread. You feel this alone even in a room full of people, because each of you runs the same catastrophe privately at night. This is not wisdom. It is a mind trying to do a job no mind can finish — holding every possible future at once. Your team exists so no one person has to imagine everything. If you are each still carrying the full weight in private, the work of dividing it has not been done. The fix is not to imagine less. It is to imagine together, out loud, then assign the imagining to specific hands. What you can test, test. What you can guard, guard. What remains is not yours to solve tonight — it belongs to the wider field, and you are one contributor to it, not its sole guardian.

The mental move (dividing shared dread into owned tasks) matters more here than any new concept, so guidance leads.

What’s really going on

You do not carry every harm you can imagine — you carry only the next action in front of you. Divide the work with your team: name what you control — this test, this guardrail, this review — and do it fully. The rest is not yours to hold alone tonight.

A moveWrite down three specific harms you fear — exact scenarios, not vague dread. A vague fear cannot be assigned to anyone.
A moveBring the list to your team and divide it: name who owns testing for each harm, who owns watching for it after launch.
A moveSet a boundary on the imagining: one hour, in the room, with others — not alone at your desk at midnight.
A moveName the harms nobody in the room can act on. Send those upward, to leadership or the wider field. Do not adopt them by default.
A moveIf the dread still follows you home most nights, don't manage it alone — talk with someone outside the work too.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop carrying imagined harms alone; they are named and divided among the team.
  • You can tell the difference between what your role actually controls and what belongs to others.
  • Private dread becomes a specific, shared list with owners and next steps.
  • You end each day able to say what you did, not what you failed to prevent.
