Why Am I Always Outside for Everyone Except Me?

One day Nasreddin's neighbor complained: "I feed the chickens, I feed the cow, I feed my children — who feeds me?" Nasreddin said, "You. But you keep forgetting you're in the barn too." This is the same barn. You walk outside every day, but you walk as staff. The dog's need. The children's need. Your body is out there in the sun and the wind, but you are not — you are managing a task that happens to occur outdoors. The fix is not more outside time. You likely have plenty. The fix is noticing that a few of those minutes could belong to you, if you simply decided they did.

This isn't a knowledge gap — the person already knows they're outside daily; the work is noticing and reclaiming, so coaching carries most of the weight.

What’s really going on

Because you have never once put your own name on the leash. The dog gets a walk. The children get supervision. Nobody schedules the sky for you. Fix this not by finding more time, but by claiming five minutes of the time you already spend outside — for nothing, for no one, for yourself.

A moveOn your next dog walk or yard duty, pick one two-minute stretch and do nothing but notice: sky, smell, temperature on your skin. Name it out loud to your pod afterward.
A moveAsk your partner or pod to take the leash or the kids for ten minutes, twice this week, with zero agenda from you except standing outside doing nothing useful.
A moveRotate 'outside duty' inside your pod so each person gets one stretch a week that is purely theirs — no dog, no child, no task attached.
A moveKeep a shared note where the pod logs one moment each day they were outside 'for no one.' Read them aloud once a week.
A moveIf ten minutes feels impossible to claim even with support, that's worth naming to someone outside the pod too — a counselor or trusted guide can help untangle why rest feels unearned.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You can name at least one outdoor moment each week that belonged only to you.
  • Your pod actively covers for each other so everyone gets unclaimed outdoor time, not just the loudest asker.
  • You notice functional outdoor time differently — less errand, more air.
  • You stop waiting for free time to appear and start carving it out of time you already have.
