Why can't I get these leaders to agree on what the product needs?
You sit in the room where product leaders argue. Each one pushes a different priority. You leave thinking if you just explain the tradeoffs better, they'll come around. They won't. Not because they're foolish. Agreement was never truly their goal. Each leader is optimizing for their own version of winning. One wants to look decisive to their boss. Another wants a pet feature shipped before the next review. A third wants no blame if something fails. The fight over priorities is often a fight over whose reputation survives the quarter. You are not a referee stuck between them. You are the one person in that room holding the shared goal in mind. That is real power, if you use it. Stop asking them to agree. Start deciding what the product actually needs. Then make that decision visible.
They will never fully agree — each one is protecting how they look, not the product. Stop trying to please all of them. Pick the goal the product needs. Say it plainly. Hold that line. Your job is not consensus. It is clarity.
What changes unlock by starting
- You stop shuttling opinions back and forth and start making calls.
- Leaders trust you more, because you stop flattering them.
- Meetings shrink, because the goal is already named before you walk in.
- You feel like the one steering the room, not the hostage in it.
