Why do I keep waiting to get 'fit enough' to start?

Nasreddin wanted to visit his cousin in the next village. 'I will go,' he said, 'when my donkey is stronger.' So he fed the donkey extra barley and waited. The donkey grew old waiting to become young. Years later, Nasreddin learned his cousin had also been waiting — for his own knees to improve before making the trip to see Nasreddin. Here is the honest part: "fitter" is not a place you arrive at. It is a line that keeps walking away from you, at exactly the speed you walk toward it. What you have actually built, all these years, is not a fitness problem. You have built a very solid habit of postponing. The fix is not more willpower or a better plan for next month. It is making the thing so small it fits the body you have today. Not the body you hope to have. The one sitting here now.

What’s really going on

The fitness you are waiting for will not arrive while you wait. It arrives after you start. Pick the smallest, almost-silly version of one thing on your list and do it this week, at the fitness you have right now. Fitness follows action. It almost never leads it.

🔒 What you’ll build togetherUnlock by starting
A movePick one item from your someday list. Shrink it until you could do it today without any training.
A movePut that shrunk version on this week's calendar, on a real day, at a real time — not 'this month.'
A moveDo it. Notice exactly what got tired first — legs, lungs, nerve — that's your real training target, not 'fitness' in general.
A moveSet a date to try a slightly bigger version. A date, not a fitness level, is your next milestone.
A moveMove the original item from 'someday' to 'done (small version)' and let that column start filling up.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You will have actually started something, instead of having planned to start it again.
  • You will know the specific thing that's weak, instead of the vague feeling of 'not fit enough.'
  • Your someday list gets shorter as items move into a done, smaller-version column.
  • Fitness stops being the locked gate and starts being what shows up after you walk through.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Nas’s live plan for your version of it.
