Why do I keep waiting to start my retirement account?

Three years is not an accident. Each month you made a choice, and called it patience. Reason asks a plain question: does waiting for perfect income serve you, or only comfort your fear of the next step? Self-employed income rarely settles into calm water. If you wait for stillness, you wait forever, and your later self pays for it. That later self deserves the same care you give your present self — she is not less real, not less worthy of provision. You are not doing this alone. A pod or partner can hold what you keep avoiding alone. Use them not to judge you, but to see clearly what you cannot see when you are inside the excuse.

The mechanics of opening an account are simple once named; the real work is breaking a three-year pattern of avoidance, which needs coaching more than teaching.

What’s really going on

Reason shows the wait was never about stability — no self-employed income becomes stable by itself. The waiting serves your fear, not your future. Open an account this week, contribute something small, and let a partner or pod witness it. A small start now serves you; delay serves no one.

A moveWrite down exactly what 'stable income' means in dollars — if you cannot name the number, admit you were never waiting for it
A movePick one self-employed retirement option this week (a SEP-IRA or Solo 401(k) are common starting points) and open it, even before you feel ready
A moveSet a contribution as a percentage of income, not a fixed dollar amount, so it moves with your variable work instead of waiting on it
A moveTell your pod or partner the date you will open the account, and ask one person to check in on that date
A moveContribute something small the first month — the amount matters less than breaking the three-year freeze

What changes unlock by starting

  • An open retirement account, even if imperfect
  • A contribution system that flexes with irregular income instead of requiring stability first
  • The excuse of 'when it stabilizes' removed for good
  • A pod or partner who knows the date and can check that it happened
