Why do I use the screen more than I meant to?

You say you don't intend to use screens this much. But when you are tired, busy, or overwhelmed, the screen manages your child for you. This happens more than you meant it to. You are not judging yourself for it. You are simply seeing it clearly, which already takes courage. Here is what I want you to notice: the hand that reaches for the screen is not evil. It may be exhausted. It may be afraid — afraid of the meltdown, the noise, the failure to be enough today. Fear reaches for whatever stops the pain fastest. Love reaches for what actually helps, even when it costs more. You are not doing this alone. Your partner, your pod, the people around your child — they carry this weight too, whether they say it or not. The work is not to banish the screen. The work is to see, together and honestly, which hand is reaching, and why.

This problem is less about new information and more about noticing motive in the moment, so coaching carries most of the weight.

What’s really going on

The screen itself is not the problem. Ask yourself: in this moment, am I reaching for it from love — to give my child something good — or from fear, because I cannot bear my own tiredness? Notice which one it is. That noticing, not guilt, is where anything changes.

A moveBefore you hand over the screen, pause three seconds and name the feeling underneath — tired, overwhelmed, touched-out.
A moveTell your partner or pod when you are running on empty, before the screen becomes your only answer, not after.
A moveChoose one small pocket of the day to protect screen-free, and defend it together, not alone.
A moveWhen guilt shows up afterward, ask plainly: was that love or was that fear? Let the answer teach you, not shame you.
A moveBring the real pattern to your pod each week — not a confession, a shared map of where love and fear both show up.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You catch the moment before reaching for the screen more often than before.
  • Your partner or pod knows when you're depleted, instead of guessing from the outside.
  • You carry less shame and more honesty about what your days actually look like.
  • Small, real changes build over weeks — without needing to become a different parent overnight.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Rabia’s live plan for your version of it.
