Why do rude guests still get under my skin?

You've built real skill. You handle the rush, the complaints, the broken plate. Then one guest raises their voice, and something in you flips. Your jaw tightens. Your voice changes. You carry that heat to the next table, and the next guest pays for it too. Talk to your team about it. You'll hear the same story from everyone — 'that guest' who ruined their shift. But notice: it's rarely the same guest for two people. That's the clue. The guest didn't do this to you. You did this to you. This isn't about swallowing insults or pretending to be calm. It's about seeing clearly what's yours — your response — and what isn't — their behavior. Your pod can help you see the moment you hand over the wheel, if you agree to call it out for each other.

What’s really going on

The guest doesn't put anger into you — you supply it, then blame them. You can't control who walks in cruel or demanding. You can control what you do in the next ten seconds. That's the only wheel you ever hold. Choose to keep it.

A moveName it out loud to your pod within a minute of it happening: 'That guest just had my mind for a second.'
A moveBefore your shift, pick one phrase you'll say to yourself the moment the first rude guest arrives.
A moveAfter a hard interaction, ask a teammate: 'Did I hand over the wheel, or keep it?'
A movePractice the ten-second pause: breathe, name what's still in your control, then act.
A moveAt the end of shift, tell one teammate which guest almost got you, and how you took the wheel back.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You feel the sting less often, and it fades faster when it comes.
  • Your team names the pattern together instead of just venting about 'bad guests.'
  • You carry less anger from one table to the next.
  • You start catching the moment of choice before you react, not after.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
