Why do the hard cases and dead ends stop me cold?

You can run the basic investigation. You know the steps, and on simple cases they work. Then a complex case arrives, or a dead end, and the steps stop working — and you mistake this for a lack of skill. It is not a lack of skill. It is a lack of patience with the actual chain of cause and effect. Somewhere in the case you stopped checking and started guessing, and you did not notice the switch. The dead end is not further down the road than your competence. It is exactly where you left the road. You do not need a new technique for hard cases. You need to slow down at the exact point things went quiet, and ask what you assumed there without proof. That is the whole difference between a beginner and someone who can be trusted with the hard ones.
