Why do the users who can't follow directions still get under my skin?

You have already done the hard work. Remote support no longer rattles you. But one category of user still gets under your skin — the ones who cannot, or will not, follow the steps you give them. You feel your patience thin. You start narrating your own irritation instead of solving the problem in front of you. Name what is actually happening. It is not that these users are unusually difficult. It is that you have no standing plan for them, so each one arrives as a fresh emergency. A team without a shared method for the hard cases will keep having hard cases, forever, one at a time. This is fixable, and it is fixable together. One person's patience is a limited resource. A team's method is not. Build the method once, as a group, and no single one of you has to grit your teeth through it alone next time.

The team lacks a shared method for hard-case users, so teaching a repeatable structure matters as much as the personal discipline to use it.

What’s really going on

Because you are still asking reality to be different than it is. Some users will not follow directions, not today, not ever. That is settled. What is not settled is your response. Choose the script, the pace, the handoff point — before the call, not during it.

A moveAs a team, write down the exact phrases that make a call go sideways — then draft one calm response for each, together.
A moveSet a fixed rule for when to move from talking someone through it to taking control of the screen. Put a number on it: after two failed attempts, you switch approach.
A moveBefore your next shift, choose in advance how long you will stay patient. Do not decide this in the moment, when you are already frustrated.
A moveAfter a hard call, tell one teammate what happened, plainly, without dressing it up. Let them tell you where you handled it well and where you didn't.
A moveRotate who takes the worst calls. Do not let one person absorb all the friction while the rest of the team stays comfortable.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A written, shared plan for the calls that used to feel like emergencies
  • Less private frustration, because the team carries the hard cases together
  • Faster decisions mid-call, because the fork in the road was chosen in advance
  • A team that trusts each other with the ugly calls, not just the easy ones
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
