Why does everyone else's pain feel like mine now?

You sit with people at their worst. You hear what broke them. You carry it home, and now it colors how you see strangers, your own family, the whole world. This is not weakness. It is what happens when a door is left open with no hinge. The problem is not that you feel too much. It is that you never decided what belongs to you and what belongs to them. Without that line, their weight becomes your weight, and you have no way to set it down. Your team stands at the same door, every day. Talk about where the line is, together, before the flood rises. And if the weight will not lift no matter what you try, find someone trained in this exact wound. That is not defeat. That is discipline.

The core failure is a missing boundary, not missing information, so most of the work is practicing the action of drawing and holding that line.

What’s really going on

You did not lose yourself by accident. You drew no line between what is theirs and what is yours, so it all flowed in. Draw the line now. Feel what is real, then hand back what was never yours to keep.

A moveAt the end of each day, say or write three things you carried that are not yours to keep.
A moveBuild a closing ritual — wash your hands, change your shirt, walk a different way home — that tells your mind the work has ended.
A moveAsk your pod weekly: whose story am I still carrying that I finished hours ago?
A moveWhen you catch yourself judging a stranger through someone else's wound, stop and ask: is this mine, or borrowed?
A moveIn your team check-in, have each person name one thing they released, not just one thing they endured.

  • You end your workday without the day following you home.
  • You judge new people and situations on their own terms, not through inherited fear.
  • Your team notices each other's overload before it becomes a crisis.
  • You keep the compassion that makes you good at this work, without carrying the wreckage.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
