Why does my courage disappear when the cost gets real?
You've practiced courage until it's a habit — you speak up in the small meeting, you correct the small error, you tell each other the small truth. That part is done. It's the big act that stops you: the one where your job, your name, or your standing with each other is actually at risk. Here is what happens. When the cost is small, you ask the right question: is this true, is this right? When the cost is large, you quietly swap it for a different question: is this worth it to me? Nobody announces the swap. You just find yourselves negotiating instead of deciding, and the negotiation always finds a reason to wait. That swap is the whole problem. Not your nerve, not your character — the question you're asking. Fix the question and the freeze has nothing left to stand on.
You freeze because you quietly change the question. On small things you ask, 'what's right?' On costly things you ask, 'what's this worth to me?' That second question has no courage in it — only calculation. Go back to the first question. Ask it about the big act too. Then act.
What changes unlock by starting
- You can name, in one sentence, the exact question that's stopping you before you speak.
- Your pod keeps a running list of the real acts still owed, not just the safe ones already done.
- You've done at least one costly act this month, with your pod holding you to the date.
- The gap between your small courage and your big courage starts closing, because you're using the same question for both.
