Why does my CV still sound like my old job, not my new self?

You updated your thinking months ago. Your CV still lists the job you left behind in spirit, if not on paper. You read it back and think: that's not who's making decisions anymore. This is not dishonesty. It's lag. Starlight reaches us years after the star itself has changed shape. Your CV describes a fixed point. You are a moving one. No document can catch a person who keeps moving — it must be updated, on purpose, again and again. Do this with the people around you — your pod, your team, whoever sees your work up close. They already know the new version of you. Let them help you write it down.

People need a quick reframe (documents lag identity, they don't lie), then mostly need to do the rewrite work together, out loud, now.

What’s really going on

A CV is a record of what you did, not proof of who you are now. The gap you feel is real, not vanity. Your job, and your team's, is to update the record to match the work you already do — not invent a new self to sell.

A moveSit down with your pod and list three decisions you made last month that your old title never would have made.
A moveRead your current CV aloud together. Mark every line describing work you no longer do.
A moveAsk each person in your pod to describe your value in one sentence — then compare it to your bullet points.
A moveRewrite one line, together, out loud, until it names the actual work, not the old role.
A moveSet a repeat date, six months out, to do this again, because you'll move again.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A CV or profile draft that matches the work you're doing now, not the work you did then.
  • A clear list of what to cut, built with people who see your work firsthand.
  • Practice naming your own value out loud, with witnesses.
  • A standing habit of updating the record, instead of waiting until it embarrasses you.
