Why Does My Rest Keep Turning Into Scrolling?

One evening Nasreddin lay down to rest. He said, 'Now I will do nothing.' But his hand did not believe him. It reached for his pipe, then his worry beads, then the neighbor's gossip. Nasreddin said, 'I told you to rest.' His hand said, 'You told me nothing else.' You schedule rest the same way — as an absence. No phone, no work, no scrolling. But 'no' is not an instruction a hand can follow. The moment you lie down, your hand goes looking for its old job, and the phone is always closest. This gets easier with witnesses. Alone, you renegotiate with yourself in the dark and lose. With a pod or a partner, someone else can hold the phone, hold you to the plan, or just ask what happened — and 'what happened' turns into information instead of shame.

This is mostly a doing problem — designing a replacement behavior and enlisting others — so guidance dominates over teaching.

What’s really going on

Rest is not empty space you fall into — it needs a shape, or your hands will make one up. Scrolling isn't weakness; it's the only instruction your hands were given. Decide what your hands do before you lie down, and the phone loses its job.

A moveBefore you lie down, name the one thing your hands will hold instead — a book, a mug, a pillow, a person's hand.
A moveHand your phone to a pod-mate or put it in another room before you start resting, not after.
A moveTell your pod what real rest looks like for you in plain terms, and ask one person to check in after 20 minutes.
A movePractice a two-minute version of the rest first, so the habit has somewhere to go before the long one.
A moveWhen scrolling wins anyway, report it to your pod like weather, not confession — just data for the next attempt.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You lie down with a plan for your hands, not just a wish for your willpower.
  • Your pod knows exactly what to check on, and someone actually does.
  • Scrolling drops simply because the phone is harder to reach.
  • Rest starts to feel like rest instead of a failed attempt at rest.
