Why does the same contraband still shake me every time?

You did the training. You know the protocol cold. And still, each time contraband turns up, each time an incident breaks the shift open, something in you flinches — as if this were new, as if it should not be happening to you. Here is the honest accounting: the job is incidents. That is not a flaw in your performance, it is the description of the work. You are not failing to prevent disorder. You were hired to stand where disorder shows up. What wears you down is not the event itself. It is the argument you have with reality afterward — the part of you insisting this shouldn't keep happening. That argument is optional. You can drop it today.

The reader already has the operational knowledge; what's missing is the daily discipline to stop being destabilized by expected events, which requires coaching, not instruction.

What’s really going on

You have mastered the procedure. You have not mastered the moment. What tests you is not the incident — it is your wish that incidents would stop happening. Choose to meet each one as expected, not as insult. The job was never going to run clean. Only your response is yours to govern.

🔒 What you’ll build togetherUnlock by starting
A moveBefore your next shift, name aloud three things that might go wrong today — so when they happen, you meet a guest, not an intruder.
A moveAfter an incident, ask yourself one question only: did I do the next right action? Not 'why did this happen,' not 'why me.'
A moveWrite down, at shift's end, one thing that was within your control and one that was not. Stop reviewing the second one.
A moveNotice the moment your body tenses before you know the facts. That tension is your judgment, not the event. Pause and rename it: 'an incident,' not 'an outrage.'
A moveWhen contraband surfaces, handle it the same way whether it is the first time this month or the fifth. Sameness of response is the goal, not fewer occurrences.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop being surprised by what your job actually consists of.
  • Your recovery time after an incident shortens, because you're no longer arguing with what happened.
  • You separate what you control (your action, your composure) from what you don't (whether people break rules).
  • You carry less resentment into each shift, because you've stopped expecting the job to be other than it is.
One object, two jobs: a public answer to a real problem, and — the moment you start the chat — Aurelius’s live plan for your version of it.
