Why does upselling still feel manipulative even though it works?
You learned the technique. It closes. And still, something in you objects when you use it. Do not call that objection weakness. It is information you have not yet examined. Here is the distinction that matters: manipulation serves your interest at the customer's expense, dressed up to look otherwise. An honest upsell serves the customer's interest, and yours happens to align with it. Same words, same moment, entirely different acts. The discomfort you feel is your mind correctly refusing to let you skip this distinction. What is in your power is not the script. It is your intent before you speak, and your willingness to say nothing when the fit isn't there. Master that, and the discomfort has nothing left to feed on.
The feeling is not proof you did wrong. It is proof you have not tested the transaction closely enough. Before you speak, ask one question: does this serve the customer's actual need, or only your number? If you cannot answer clearly, you are not ready to make the offer.
What changes unlock by starting
- A concrete test to run before every upsell, instead of an argument with your own feelings
- You catch yourself before pushing something you don't actually believe helps the customer
- A written record, over weeks, that shows whether your offers serve people or just your target
- Less need for outside reassurance about whether selling makes you a bad person
