Why doesn't anyone value work we're proud of?
You do careful work. Your team does careful work. And the client, the boss, the market — they treat it like anyone could do it, like it doesn't matter who shows up. That stings. It should not surprise you. Here is what you keep forgetting: their respect was never in your power to command. You cannot make a person value what you do. You can only do it well or badly. Waiting for the world to hand you meaning is waiting for something that was never owed to you. What is in your power, and your team's power together, is smaller and harder: agree on your own standard, hold each other to it, and stop needing outside applause to know the work mattered.
The world was never obligated to admire your work. That was never yours to control. What is yours: doing it well, and agreeing with each other on what 'well' means. Stop measuring your worth by their notice. Measure it by the standard you and your team actually hold.
What changes unlock by starting
- You stop needing outside approval to know the work counted
- Your team has a shared, spoken standard instead of a silent, shifting one
- Less resentment toward people who were never going to give you what you wanted from them
- A steadier, quieter kind of pride that doesn't collapse when no one claps
