Knowledge + Guidance

Why is leading my crew harder than working the post myself?

You know how to stand a post. You know how to stay alert for eight hours and notice what others miss. That skill is why they made you supervisor. Now it is nearly useless, and no one has told you this. You are still checking the cameras yourself. Still walking the floor like you're the one who has to see everything. Your crew waits for orders, because you never actually handed them the job of noticing — you just added their names to your list of things to watch. You used to do the work of one good guard. Now you must make several people do the work of a team, and that is a different skill entirely. This is not a character flaw. It is an untrained transition. No one gave you a manual for turning a guard into a supervisor. Choose to build one yourself — starting with what you assign, not with what you personally catch.

The core insight (doing vs. leading) needs to be taught once clearly, but the real change happens through specific weekly habits, so guidance carries more weight.

What’s really going on

You did not get your old job with a new name. You got a new job. Your work is no longer the watch — it is the watchers. Stop measuring yourself by what you personally catch. Start measuring yourself by what your crew catches without you standing over them.

A moveStop walking the floor alone. Walk it with your newest guard and say out loud what you're noticing, so they learn to notice too.
A moveBuild a short end-of-shift report each guard fills in — not to catch mistakes, but to train their eyes.
A moveWhen something slips, ask 'what did the schedule fail to cover' before you ask 'who missed it.'
A moveGive the crew ten minutes each week to tell you what they're seeing that you are not.
