You want to be a better partner while things are good

Nothing is wrong. You are not repairing anything. You simply want to love this person well, on purpose, while there is room to — which is the only time it is easy to learn.

What’s really going on

You want to love well while things are good. Most people arrive at this question only after damage, and arrive tired. You are arriving rested, which is a real advantage. Ask what you would give. First, find out what actually lands for them rather than what lands for you — we give what we would want to receive, and then feel unseen when it is not returned in kind. Ask them plainly: what do I do that makes you feel loved? The answer is often smaller and stranger than you expect. Second, say the specific thing out loud. Not that you love them, which they know, but the particular thing you noticed today. Specificity is the proof that you were paying attention. Third, protect one hour that has no purpose. Not a date with a plan and an outcome — an hour with nothing to achieve, which is the first thing a full life quietly deletes. What makes them feel loved, in their words rather than yours?

What changes unlock by starting

  • You give what actually lands for them instead of what would land for you.
  • They hear the specific thing, which is the part that proves you were watching.
  • You have unstructured time together that a busy month cannot delete.
  • Small irritations get said while they are still small.
