Knowledge + Guidance

I can produce the numbers, but not the insight. Why?

You already did the hard technical part. You pulled the numbers, checked them, built the report. Then you stopped, right where the real work begins, and called it done. Here is what is happening. A summary of data cannot be wrong. It just sits there, safe. But an insight is a claim — this means something, so we should act. A claim can be challenged. You would rather hand someone a clean table than say something that might be mistaken. This is not a skills problem. You know how to read your own numbers. It is a nerve problem. You are choosing safety over usefulness, and calling it thoroughness.

The reframe (insight is a claim, not a summary) can be taught in one line; the real work is building the nerve to state it, which requires coaching and practice.

What’s really going on

The numbers are not the work. The insight is the work, and you are avoiding it. You stop at the data because a judgment can be wrong, and a table of numbers cannot. Choose the judgment anyway. Write one sentence: this means X, so we should do Y. That sentence is your job.

A moveBefore you send any report, write one sentence first: 'This means ___, so we should ___.' Do not send without it.
A moveDelete every chart and number that does not serve that sentence. If it doesn't hold the claim up, it doesn't belong.
A moveAsk yourself: what decision should change because of this data? If you can't name one, you haven't found the insight yet — keep looking.
A movePut the sentence at the top of the report, not the bottom. Let the numbers follow as proof, not lead as decoration.
A movePractice saying 'I recommend' instead of 'here is the data.' Say it even when you're not fully sure. Certainty comes after, not before.

What changes unlock by starting

  • Every report leaves your hands with a clear recommendation attached, not just data.
  • People stop asking you 'so what should we do about this.'
  • You spend less time polishing charts and more time deciding what they mean.
  • Decision-makers start reading your reports directly, instead of passing them to someone else to interpret.
