Why do complex schematics confuse me when simple diagrams don't?

You look at the schematic and your mind goes flat. Every line seems to matter at once. You did not feel this with the simple diagram, so you conclude something is wrong with you. Nothing is wrong with you. The complex plan is not one object. It is many simple diagrams laid on top of each other — structure, wiring, flow, load, whatever the layers are in your trade. You do not have a reading problem. You have a sequencing problem. A complex plan is many simple diagrams stacked on top of each other. Stop trying to see the whole page at once. Choose one layer, read it alone, then choose the next. Order is the skill you lack — not comprehension.
