Toward Craftsmanship
Nobody formally requires me to be reachable at all hours but the culture means I always am. I have never tested whether responding to a 10pm message actually matters.

Test whether the late message actually needs you

Set explicit off-hours

Notice nothing breaks
Stop Dreading Monday
The journey that resolves this.
One thing to try this week
Do not respond to any non-urgent message after 8pm this week. Track whether any actual problem results from the delay.
Related problems
Any time not spent working feels wasted to me — a slow afternoon, an unproductive evening, a lazy morning all carry a low guilt. I have lost the ability to value time that produces nothing, which means I can never fully rest in it.
Even in the closest moments — with my partner, my children, the people I love most — my mind is half on work. I am physically present and mentally drafting an email, and the people in front of me can feel that I am not really there.
Even when I am not working my mind is still at work. I cannot actually be present at home.
Hundreds of lives move through my attention every shift, and the fear of the one lapse that ends careers and lives never fully leaves me.
I am reflexively the last one to leave — I stay late by default, long after the work needs it, because leaving while others remain feels like failing. The long hours have become an identity more than a necessity, and I cannot seem to just go home.
I am technically on holiday. I am checking email hourly, available for calls, and monitoring for problems. Nobody in my family believes I am really away because they can see I am not.
