Belonging vs. fitting in — the distinction that matters

Fitting in asks you to make yourself smaller, more legible, less particular — to sand down whatever makes you difficult in order to be received. Belonging asks nothing of the kind; it receives you as you are, specifically. The tragedy is that most of us have spent years perfecting our fitting-in and have almost no experience of being genuinely belonged to.
