Attraction is partly chemistry — pheromones, facial symmetry, genetic complementarity — and partly projection, and partly something that resists any clean account. What we find beautiful in another person tells us something about ourselves, but not everything; some attraction is straightforwardly desire and some is the soul recognizing something it needs. This domain holds the science and the mystery together without collapsing one into the other.
