Cultural assimilation vs. preservation

The pressure to assimilate is rarely experienced as invitation; it arrives as demand — change yourself or remain outside. What gets called preservation is often the refusal to accept that the price of belonging is self-erasure. Neither pure assimilation nor hermetic preservation is finally possible; what cultures do, when they are healthy, is negotiate — borrowing and adapting while holding the thread back to their own sources.
