The Body Politic: Personal and Political Integration

Sor Juana's body was always political: a female body claiming intellectual space challenged the social order. She understood that her personal identity was entangled with questions of rights, justice, and power. This concept rejects the false separation between personal and political. Your body is not a private, apolitical space. How you are treated, what rights you claim, what expectations are imposed on your physicality—these are all political. Understanding this integration prevents both narcissistic isolation and false universalism. Your identity includes recognizing how your body is positioned in systems of gender, race, class, and power, and how your choices about embodiment either reinforce or challenge those systems. Authentic self-concept acknowledges this entanglement and chooses deliberately within it.
