Sor Juana's "Response to Sor Filotea" is essentially a defense of why intellectual work was necessary to her identity and valuable to her community. She didn't assume her role would be understood; she had to argue for it, explain it, and demonstrate its worth. In Confucian contexts, role identity is often assumed rather than defended, yet Sor Juana's example reveals that in changing or contested circumstances, roles require articulation. For contemporary practitioners, this concept suggests that maintaining authentic role identity in pluralistic contexts requires ongoing explanation and justification. It is not enough to occupy a role; one must be able to articulate why it matters, how it serves others, and what capacities it requires. This is particularly important for those whose roles are non-traditional or whose identities cross conventional boundaries. The practice involves both internal clarity and external communication, strengthening role identity through reflective defense.
