Gender and the Boundaries of Role

Sor Juana's entire life demonstrates resistance to the gendered cage: a brilliant mind confined to convent walls, a woman forbidden formal education yet becoming Mexico's most learned intellectual. She neither abandoned her vows nor abandoned her study; instead she occupied her role with such excellence and integrity that the constraints became less absolute. She proved capacity within restriction. In modern Confucian role identity, gender remains a reality—not as biological destiny but as social positioning that shapes expectations and access.
