Reading Inscription and Resistance

Sor Juana lived in a body inscribed by multiple systems: race, gender, religion, class. She could read these inscriptions and chose which ones to accept, which to subvert. This concept asks you to develop inscription literacy. Your body carries the marks of culture: beauty standards, gender expectations, racial categories, family patterns. Most people live these inscriptions unconsciously, believing them natural. Reading inscription means noticing what has been written on your body and by whom. You were taught to smile, to make yourself small, to be available, to apologize. You were marked as acceptable or unacceptable based on appearance. Sor Juana's legacy is the capacity to read these inscriptions and then to decide: Will I accept this marking? Will I resist? Will I rewrite? Consciousness itself is resistance. You cannot unwrite what culture has inscribed, but you can read it clearly, understand its purpose, and choose your response. Physical self-concept grounded in this practice becomes an act of hermeneutics and deliberate choice.
