Wu Wei in Digital Consent

Wu wei—action without forcing—reveals how digital consent has become inverted: platforms coerce agreement through complexity and default settings rather than genuine choice. True wu wei in data ownership means resisting the friction of resistance itself. When platforms require endless clicks to opt-out while defaults collect everything, they violate wu wei's principle of natural action. Instead, genuine alignment between user and platform occurs when data practices flow from honest exchange rather than hidden extraction. Laozi would recognize this as the Tao of digital relations: when consent requires elaborate resistance, the system itself has lost its way.
