Why It Matters

Mirabai's radical response to patriarchal violence was not organized rebellion but ecstatic devotion—singing, dancing, pouring her pain into worship. This is not passivity; it is a different order of response. Bhakti as pratikriya (response) suggests that our deepest power lies not in fighting the external system but in withdrawing our allegiance from it through love of something higher. When Mirabai sang of Krishna, she was implicitly rejecting her family's gods, her husband's authority, her culture's expectations.
