Why It Matters

Fear often disguises itself as loyalty, commitment, or love. 'I cannot leave because I promised.' 'I cannot leave because they need me.' 'I cannot leave because I am afraid of being alone.' Bhaya-vichara is the practice of examining fear directly and honestly. Mirabai's choice to leave her marriage was not fearless—she faced tremendous social condemnation, abandonment, uncertainty. But she distinguished between legitimate fear (physical danger, genuine harm) and false fear (social judgment, existential discomfort). When leaving a relationship, this framework asks: What am I actually afraid of? Is this fear protecting something true, or protecting something false that I have mistaken for identity? Are you staying because the person is genuinely good for you, or because departure feels like death? The examined fear loses its absolute authority.
