Tyaga-Dharma: Renunciation as Right Action

A framework that understands leaving as sometimes the most ethical action, not the opposite of commitment.

Why It Matters

In Hindu philosophy, tyaga is sacred renunciation—the deliberate release of what you love for a higher truth. It is not rejection or escape but conscious offering. Dharma is duty and right action. Tyaga-dharma asks: What is my actual responsibility here? Sometimes staying in a relationship becomes unethical—it requires you to lie, to abandon yourself, to enable harm. Mirabai's departure honored both her own dharma (to authenticity) and ultimately her husband's (she could not be the wife he deserved). When leaving a relationship, this framework provides moral clarity: there are times when departure is not selfishness but the most loving action available. You release the relationship as an offering to truth, to growth, and to the possibility of greater authenticity for both people. This reframes leaving from sin to sacrament.
