Why It Matters

A boundary is often understood negatively—what you're against, what you refuse. Mirabai's tradition suggests an inversion: a boundary is a container. It holds what you love and protects it from contamination. The boundary around your spiritual practice is not a refusal of your partner but a fierce protection of the space where you meet the sacred. The boundary around your emotional energy is not rejection but preservation of what allows you to love generously. The boundary around your truth is not defensiveness but stewardship of your integrity. In bhakti, the devotee builds a container around the relationship with the divine—specific times for prayer, specific places for meditation, specific practices that maintain the connection. Similarly, healthy relational boundaries create containers: time for the relationship, time for self, clear agreements about what happens within the relationship and what remains private. These containers allow love to deepen because they are tended with care. The boundary becomes an act of devotion to the relationship itself, not a barrier against it.
