The Gossip Turned Inward: Mirroring as Shadow Work

People raged at Mirabai—called her shameless, unfaithful, mad. Rather than dismiss their judgment, she could ask: what truth is reflected here? What do I reject about myself that this criticism illuminates? This practice of shadow work through others' projections allows us to examine the rage underneath our self-rejection. Often our fiercest anger at others masks our deepest shame about ourselves. By inverting the gossip, by allowing harsh judgment to become a mirror, we can see what we're denying or condemning in our own nature. Mirabai's freedom came partly from refusing to internalize society's judgment—but that refusal was more powerful because she'd examined what truth might lie beneath it. This concept invites: when someone's criticism makes you rage, what are they accidentally revealing about your shadow? What do you furiously reject in yourself?
