Prema, or divine love, is often sentimentalized, but Mirabai's life embodied it as radical honesty. She refused the expected widow's silence, danced publicly, sang her fury at God and family alike. Her prema was not gentle—it was a love that would not accept false peace. When we examine the rage underneath our grief, prema invites us to ask: Am I performing acceptable emotions, or am I loving truthfully? Anger often erupts when we've suppressed authentic feeling to maintain harmony or approval. By practicing prema—love that insists on truth—we give ourselves permission to feel and express what's real, even when it disrupts the narrative others prefer. This is love as integrity, not niceness.
