Does nature even matter if I can't reach it from my apartment?

You have decided that nature is a place you visit, and since you cannot visit it, you have stopped thinking about it at all. That is a tidy way to grieve something without noticing you are grieving. But somewhere along the way, 'nature' quietly became a synonym for 'forest' or 'mountain.' That swap did the damage. A pigeon fighting over a crumb is doing exactly what a hawk does. It is just closer to your window. Alone, you notice little. With three others, on purpose, comparing what you saw — you notice a lot. That comparing, that arguing over whether a weed counts, is the whole point.

What’s really going on

A neighbor asked Hodja why he sat under his dead tree. 'For the shade,' he said — though the tree was bare. But sparrows came anyway, and so did he. Nature is not the mountain you cannot reach. It is the crack in the pavement, the sky over the parking lot, the weed by the bus stop — if you notice it together.

A moveThis week, each pod member finds one 'unnatural' outdoor spot near home — a parking lot edge, a drainage ditch, a strip of weeds — and stands there for five minutes, just looking.
A moveBring back one photo and one sentence about something alive or moving there. Share it with the group before explaining it.
A moveArgue, on purpose, about whether what you found 'counts' as nature. Do not resolve the argument.
A movePick one shared spot — a courtyard, a rooftop, a median strip — and visit it together once a month, same time, and note what changed.
A moveBan the word 'someday' when talking about nature access. Replace it with a specific place: 'this Tuesday, at the bus stop.'

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop needing a mountain for the reframe to work.
  • Your pod builds a shared list of nearby wild-enough places none of you had noticed before.
  • The sentence 'I don't have access to nature' stops being true in your mouth.
  • You start noticing the same crack in the pavement change with the seasons, and that becomes its own small pleasure.
