How do I give generously without erasing myself?

You give a great deal, and you would not want to stop. But there is less of you each year, and you can see the arithmetic. You want generosity that does not require your disappearance.

What’s really going on

You want to be generous without erasing yourself. Notice first that these are not opposites, though they are usually taught as though they were. The depleted giver is not more loving. They are more tired, and often quietly resentful, which the people they serve can feel even when nothing is said. First, ask what you are actually giving from. Love or fear are the two, and the acts look identical from outside. Giving from love replenishes something. Giving from fear — of being unnecessary, of being disliked, of what stopping would say about you — drains, because the account it draws on was never full. Only you can tell which is which. Second, give what is asked rather than what you assume. A great deal of depletion is spent on things nobody wanted. Ask. Third, let yourself be given to. This is the harder half. The refusal to receive is not humility; it keeps you in the position of the one who never needs anything, and that is a form of distance from the people you love. Fourth, watch the resentment. It is the reliable signal that the giving has moved from love to fear, and it is information, not a failing. Which is it, love or fear?

What changes unlock by starting

  • You can tell giving from love from giving out of fear.
  • Your effort goes to what was actually wanted.
  • You receive as well as give, which closes the distance.
  • Resentment becomes a signal you can read instead of a fault you hide.
