What if I can't decide for myself, and I've written nothing down?

You have not written anything down. If the day comes when you cannot speak for yourself, someone else must guess. They will guess in fear, in a hallway, arguing with people who loved you differently than they did. This is not really about death. It is about a blank space where your voice should be. An uncarved block has no name, no shape, no use — until someone carves it. You can carve it now, calmly, or let panic carve it later, badly. Do this with your people, not alone in a drawer. A will, a directive, a note — these help only if someone else knows they exist. For the legal parts, see a lawyer or counselor; that is their craft, not water's. Your part is simpler: decide, write it down, tell your circle where it lives.

Half the work is knowing what documents and roles exist; the other half is the will to actually name them and tell your people.

What’s really going on

A blank page is not peace — it is a burden handed to those who love you. Water does not resist its container, but a house still needs a name on the door. Write down what you want. Not to control the future, but to spare others the guessing.

A movePick one weekend. Sit with your pod. Ask each other: what do you want if you cannot decide?
A moveWrite it in plain words first, no legal language yet. Say what you'd tell a friend.
A moveName one person as your voice, out loud. Do not assume they already know.
A moveTake your plain-words draft to a lawyer or clinic to make it official.
A moveTell everyone in your circle where the document lives, not just that it exists.

  • A named person who can speak for you if you cannot.
  • A written record your family won't have to guess at.
  • Less fear in your pod, because the unspoken is now spoken.
  • One less thing quietly pretending to be someone else's problem.
