Why can't I just be outside without turning it into something?
You call your friend to go for a 'walk,' but somewhere it becomes a workout. You step outside for air, but you're on a call the whole time. You have never once gone outside just to be outside — you always bring a job. Once, Nasreddin and three friends set out with no destination. Within five minutes, one was counting steps, one was on the phone with a customer, one was picking mint 'for later.' Nasreddin sat down on a rock and did nothing. When they got back, they asked what he'd accomplished. 'I sat on a rock,' he said. 'It was very hard work. Tomorrow I will find a harder rock.' Your pod already knows this trick — everyone secretly smuggles in a task and calls it fresh air. Today, try smuggling in nothing.
You don't need a job to stand under the sky. The task is a costume fear wears. Leave your phone home, pick a direction by chance, and let your feet be bored for ten minutes. Boredom outside is not empty — it's where play sneaks back in when nobody's watching.
What changes unlock by starting
- You'll catch how fast your mind invents a task — that's useful to notice, not a failure.
- Your pod will start calling out the trick in each other, laughing when they catch it.
- Unstructured time outside gets easier by the third try, not the first — expect that.
- You may find the sky more interesting than your step count, at least for a minute.
