Why do I eat but never actually taste my meals?

You say you are almost never just eating. That's exactly right. Your body sits at the table. But your attention sits somewhere else — a screen, a task, a conversation. Food reaches your stomach. It never reaches your awareness. This is not a small habit. It's a pattern that runs your whole day: doing one thing while attending to another, present nowhere fully. Eating shows this pattern clearly, because hunger makes the gap hard to hide. Working on this with others helps. When one person in your pod catches themselves reaching for their phone mid-bite, the whole group notices its own habit too.

The core teaching — attention can only be in one place, and food without attention is not nourishment — is simple and stated once; the real change comes from repeated practice, so guidance carries more weight.

What’s really going on

The mind attends to one object at a time. When you eat while working or scrolling, the mind attends to the screen — the body eats alone. This is not multitasking. It is absence. Practice: bring attention to the plate. One activity, one attention. That is the whole instruction.

A movePick one meal a day. Eat it with your pod, in person or on a call, with no screens.
A moveBefore the first bite, pause. Look at the food. Name it, silently or out loud.
A moveAgree on a shared signal with your pod — phones face-down, one plate, one attention.
A moveWhen the mind wanders to work or scrolling mid-meal, notice it and return to the plate. Do not judge. Just return.
A moveAfter the meal, tell your pod one thing you tasted or noticed that you'd normally miss.

  • You feel true fullness, not just the fullness of habit or distraction.
  • Your pod builds a shared practice of presence, not just a shared meal.
