Why do I open my statement but never actually read it?
You open the statement. Your eyes pass over the numbers. Then you close it, and later you cannot say what it showed. This is not carelessness. It is a habit your mind built to protect you from a feeling — fear, shame, or plain overwhelm. Reason only serves you when you use it. A report you do not truly read cannot guide your choices. It sits closed in a folder while your money moves without your judgment attached to it. This serves no one — not your future self, not anyone who depends on you. The gap is not in the numbers. It is in the small moment between opening the page and understanding it. That moment can be trained, the way any skill of attention is trained.
You open it because some part of you knows you should look. You close it because some part of you fears what reason would show. This is not laziness. It is a habit of avoidance, and habits of avoidance can be examined and changed like any other.
