We open the statement together — why do we still not understand it?

You open the statement. Your partner opens it too. The pension letter arrives and someone clicks it open, sees numbers, and closes it. This has gone on for months, maybe years. No one has lied. No one has hidden anything. And still, no one among you could say, this month, whether you are closer to your goal or further from it. Ask who this way of doing things actually serves. It serves no one — not the person who opened it, not the partner who trusts that opening means understanding, not the future self who will need these numbers to have been real. A statement seen but not understood serves only the illusion that the matter has been handled. Reason was given to every person, equally, to make sense of what is placed before them. It was not given only to those trained in finance. When a group lets numbers stay a private language for experts, it shuts its own members out of their own life. This can be undone — not by becoming an expert, but by insisting, together, that every figure become a plain sentence before the document is closed.
