Why do we always go back to the same holiday spot?
Nasreddin sent his donkey to market every week, same road, same stalls. One day a neighbor said, 'Hodja, there's a bigger market two villages over — more goods, better prices.' Nasreddin said, 'My donkey knows this road with its eyes closed. I'm not so sure about the two of us, but the donkey is certain.' That's what happens with your holiday. Nobody actually voted for the same place. Someone went once, it worked, and the donkey took over from there. Now it's tradition, and tradition is hard to argue with, because it never had to argue for itself in the first place. You're not stuck because you lack imagination. You're stuck because changing the plan means someone has to risk disappointing the group, and rest feels too precious to gamble on. That worry is fair. It's also fixable — together, in small pieces, without betting the whole holiday on one roll of the dice.
You are not choosing the same place. The same place is choosing you, because nobody wants to be the one who ruins everyone's rest with a new idea. Name that trade honestly — safety traded for surprise — then let the group risk one small unknown thing together this time.
What changes unlock by starting
- The group names who's been quietly vetoing change, and why
- This trip includes at least one deliberately unplanned event
- You agree on what rest actually requires, versus what's just habit
- Next holiday gets chosen on purpose, not by default
