Why doesn't 'get outside more' ever include a body like mine?

A man once brought me a brochure of a famous meadow. 'Everyone says this is where you find peace,' he said, 'but my knees will not carry me there.' I asked him: did the meadow write that brochure, or did the man who could already walk to it? Most 'get outside' advice was written by someone standing on legs, lungs, or nerves that work a certain way, describing the outside their body already fits. When yours doesn't fit, the problem looks like it's you. It isn't. It's that nobody scouted the trail for a body like yours before printing the brochure. If pain, fatigue, or access needs are heavy some days, that's worth talking through with a doctor or occupational therapist too — this page is about joy and access, not treatment.

What’s really going on

The trick is not in your body — it's in the postcard. 'Nature' was drawn by people who could already climb the mountain in it. Real outside is the balcony, the flat loop, the cracked window. Stop chasing their picture of joy. Build the one your body and your people can actually stand in, together.

A moveMake your own list of 'outside that fits,' separate from anyone else's postcard list.
A moveAssign one pod member per week as the 'access scout' — they check ramps, rest spots, and real distances before anyone else shows up.
A movePick one small outdoor ritual (five minutes on a balcony, one bench, one open window) and defend it like it matters — because it does.
A moveWhen grief about lost access shows up, let it sit for a minute before jumping to solutions. Both things are true at once.
A moveKeep a shared, growing map of doable spots your pod actually trusts — update it after every outing, good or bad.

What changes unlock by starting

  • A real, growing list of outdoor spots your pod trusts, not just admires from a distance.
  • Less energy spent comparing your outside to someone else's brochure.
  • A pod habit of scouting access before showing up, so nobody gets surprised or stranded.
  • Small, repeatable outdoor joy that doesn't depend on matching anyone else's itinerary.
