Blockchain was conceived as a way to distribute trust — to replace the central authority with a shared ledger that no single party controls. Whether it has achieved this in practice, and at what cost in energy and complexity, is a more complicated question than either its advocates or critics acknowledge. The idea underneath the technology is worth examining on its own terms.
